Baby teeth matter
Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth, help with chewing and speech, and can hurt when they decay. They are worth treating.
Restorative care, Madison
If a cavity is found, you will hear about it kindly and early. Most children need a small filling, done in one visit, with comfort and a clear plan. We explain the options, and you decide with us.
The idea
A cavity is common, treatable and nobody fault. The goal is to fix it gently, protect the tooth and help prevent the next one, without making a child feel bad about it.
The visit
A cavity is found at a check-up, sometimes with an X-ray. We show you what the dentist sees and explain the options.
You get a written plan and estimate. Treatment is scheduled for a good time of day, and we plan extra time if your child is nervous.
We numb the area and wait until it is ready. A child may feel pressure and hear sounds, which we describe before they happen.
The decayed part is cleaned out and the tooth is rebuilt with a filling. Most small fillings are finished in one visit.
The numbness fades in a few hours, so we advise on eating and on keeping cheeks safe. We call the next day to check in.
Why it matters
Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth, help with chewing and speech, and can hurt when they decay. They are worth treating.
Small cavities are easier and kinder to treat. This is why regular exams matter.
Local numbing is standard. Some children also benefit from nitrous oxide, which is discussed at a consultation, and suitability is decided there.
We look at brushing, snacks and sealants, and build a plan that fits your family.
Options
The dentist recommends the right option for each tooth. This is the general shape.
| Situation | Often suits | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| A very early spot on the enamel | Watching, fluoride and better brushing | Early spots can sometimes be reversed |
| A small cavity | A filling | Usually one visit |
| A large cavity in a baby molar | A crown, often stainless steel | Protects the tooth until it falls out naturally |
| A tooth with infection or swelling | Prompt care, possibly more than one visit | Call us the same day |
For parents
We go at your child pace. We show every tool, we give a clear stop signal, and we pause when it is needed. You stay beside the chair, and we explain things to you as well as to your child.
If a child cannot manage treatment even with our help, we talk through the options, which may include a different approach or a referral. We never rush past a child clear limit. Results vary with the child and the tooth.

Often yes. A decayed baby tooth can hurt, can spread infection and can affect the adult tooth below it. The dentist explains whether to treat or watch.
The tooth and gum are numbed first, so your child feels pressure and sound, not pain. Soreness afterwards is usually mild and short. Tell us at any point if something feels wrong.
It is a small cap that covers a baby molar with a large cavity. It protects the tooth until it falls out naturally, and it is often the most durable option for baby molars.
Nitrous oxide may be an option for some children. It is discussed at a consultation, and suitability is decided there. We never promise it over the phone.
Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, fewer sweet drinks between meals, regular check-ups and sealants where suitable. We build a plan for your child.
We do not list prices on this site. You get a written estimate before treatment, and we check what your plan is expected to cover. Third-party financing is available.
